The Chatham Dirt Road Coalition is a group of local individuals who believe that the rural character of the Town of Chatham is vital to its appeal, of value both to its long-time residents, and to the new arrivals and tourists who benefit its economy. And one of the features that most embody Chatham’s rural character is our network of dirt roads. We believe that Chatham’s remaining unpaved roads are a heritage worthy of preserving for many reasons: they provide a safer place for exercise and recreation than faster paved roads, they enhance the natural beauty of our landscape, and in a very real way they are a living connection to our history. The stories they tell benefit us all.
Our goal is to foster appreciation and to promote the enjoyment of our dirt roads for all of us, through outdoor advertising, mapping, social media and events. Just as importantly, to support the Highway Department in the continued careful maintenance of this special town asset for the benefit of the generations yet to come. Won’t you join us in our efforts?
